CELEBRATING FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

Toyi-toyi is a dance that is often used during protest in South Africa. The celebratory nature of the dance is often undercut by the chants and cries that come with it. These can be cries of celebration, pain, resistance and solace. In post-apartheid SA we see toyi-toying frequently used to display
discontentment during strikes and demonstrations. It shows South African’s
spirit and their unique ability to rejoice and seek joy during the hardest times.
