CELEBRATING INDIVIDUALITY

Bo Kaap is an area of Cape Town situated at the base of Signal Hill. It is known today for its streets full of beautifully coloured houses. Dating back to 1760s, these houses were built to lease to slaves brought to the Cape. It is
believed that while these houses were on lease, they were to remain white. After the abolition of slavery in 1834, liberated slaves were allowed to purchase land. The colour is said to be the celebration of this freedom and an
expression of individuality.
