CELEBRATING SURVIVAL
Tweede Nuwe Jaar (also known as The Kaapse Klopse) is a minstrel festival that takes place in Cape Town annually. It is colourful carnival that includes, music, dancing and singing performances by a variety of klopse (‘clubs’ or ‘troupes’). It started in the 19 th century during the time of slavery in the cape. Slaves were allowed one day (2nd January) off every year and they used this day to celebrate. In more recent years, it has been reclaimed, as a day to celebrate life and the survival of not only slavery, but the hardships of apartheid.

Today, the carnival is a celebration of colour, life, dance, music and culture. It signifies the survival and triumph of the people of the Cape.
